We welcomed Baby Luna Rose this past March 7th, and we couldn’t be happier! She is such an angel and always smiling. From the moment I got pregnant, I knew I needed to start preparing to provide our family a safe and bright future. That is why one of the things on our to-do list before the baby arrived was to arrange everything to preserve her cord blood and tissue. We did it when my first baby, Amelia Rose was born, and we knew this time around that it was non-negotiable for our second girl as well. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept of Cord Blood Banking, it is a process in which the blood that remains in the baby’s umbilical cord is collected. Then the stem cells that are found within are extracted and frozen for potential medical use by the baby and other family members.

As a former Science teacher, I knew for a fact that preserving our daughters’ cord blood and tissue was the greatest gift I could give them! Once our account was set up we received in the mail the collection kit in a ViaCord box. We filled out our information and packed the box in advance in our hospital bag. When the big day finally arrived, the day Luna was born, I handed out the collection box to the doctor before surgery. After surgery, the designated person (my handsome, smart, kind and lovely hubby in my case) received the collected cord blood and tissue. He then called the phone number instructed on the box. You must follow instructions provided by the viacord representative. This person schedules a pick up time and the collection sample is shipped directly to Viacord overnight. It’s that simple! 

We can now rest assured knowing that we did what we could right before birth to help plan for our daughter’s future medical needs. I am also sure that in the future there will be more studies and medical milestones where preserving their stem cells will be very helpful.

Becoming a mom is one of the most precious things that have happened to me, and if I had to do it all over again, my words of advice and encouragement to all other mommas out there are that it’s impossible to control everything in life, but you can plan as much as possible.  Cord blood banking is a simple way to plan. Le dimos la bienvenida a Baby Luna Rose el pasado 7 de marzo, ¡y no podríamos estar más felices! Ella es un ángel y siempre sonriente. Desde el momento en que quedé embarazada, supe que necesitaba comenzar a prepararme para brindarle a nuestra familia un futuro seguro y brillante. Es por eso que una de las cosas en nuestra lista de cosas por hacer antes de que naciera la bebé era arreglar todo para preservar la sangre y el tejido del cordón umbilical. Lo hicimos cuando nació mi primera bebé, Amelia Rose, y esta vez sabíamos que era necesario también para nuestra segunda niña. Elegimos ViaCord, que ha sido una empresa líder y confiable ayudando a cientos de miles de familias durante más de 30 años.

Para los que no están familiarizados con el concepto de Banco de Sangre de Cordón Umbilical, se trata de un proceso en el que se recoge la sangre que queda en el cordón umbilical del bebé. Luego, las células madre que se encuentran dentro se extraen y congelan para un posible uso médico por parte del bebé y otros miembros de la familia.

Como ex profesora de ciencias, ¡sabía con certeza que preservar la sangre y el tejido del cordón umbilical de nuestras hijas era el mejor regalo que les podía dar! La tranquilidad de saber que pueden tener acceso a cualquier tratamiento médico en caso de necesitarlo en el futuro no tiene precio alguno. ¡Los beneficios de almacenar esas células madre que se encuentran en la sangre del cordón umbilical son infinitos! Las células madre pueden transformarse en todo tipo de células sanguíneas que ayudan a tratar enfermedades, como la leucemia, la anemia, el cáncer y los trastornos metabólicos. También ha mostrado resultados prometedores en ensayos clínicos para tratar otras enfermedades crónicas.

Estamos muy contentos de haber podido conservar sus células madre con ViaCord. El proceso de recolección de sangre y tejido del cordón umbilical de nuestra bebé fue sencillo y sin dolor. Una vez configurada nuestra cuenta recibimos por correo el kit de recolección en una caja de ViaCord. Completamos nuestra información y empacamos la caja con anticipación en nuestra maleta del hospital. Cuando finalmente llegó el gran día, el día que nació Luna, le entregué la caja de recolección al médico antes de la cirugía. Después de la cirugía, la persona designada (en mi caso, mi apuesto, inteligente, amable y encantador esposo  :)) recibió la sangre y el tejido del cordón umbilical recolectados. Luego llamó al número de teléfono indicado en la caja. Debes seguir las instrucciones proporcionadas por el representante de Viacord. Esta persona programa una hora de recogida y la muestra de la colección se envía directamente a Viacord durante la noche. ¡Es así de simple!

Ahora podemos estar tranquilos sabiendo que hicimos lo que pudimos justo antes del nacimiento para ayudar a planificar las necesidades médicas futuras de nuestra hija. También estoy segura de que en el futuro habrá más estudios e hitos médicos en los que la conservación de sus células madre será de gran ayuda.

Si son como yo, y como mamita nueva o experimentada, deseas planificar con anticipación y ofrecer a tus hijos el mejor regalo que pueden recibir como recién nacidos, te sugiero que preserves la sangre y el tejido del cordón umbilical. ¡Solo de haber hecho esto siento que tengo algo menos de qué preocuparme en su futuro!

Convertirme en mamá es una de las cosas más preciadas que me ha pasado, y si tuviera que hacerlo todo de nuevo, mis palabras de consejo y aliento para todas las demás mamás son: es imposible controlar todo en la vida, pero puedes planificar tanto como sea posible. El almacenamiento de sangre del cordón umbilical es una forma sencilla de planificar. Al dejar ir las cosas que no puedes controlar, te permites encontrar alegría en cada día. También agregaría que tú, mamá, sabes lo que es mejor para tus hijos. No dejes que el sentimiento de agobio y ansiedad te robe la alegría y edúcate para convertirte en la mejor persona que puedas ser para ti y tu familia.
