MILLENIAL MOM: MY ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO ENJOY PREGNANCY!

pregnancy items jess bonilla maternity blog

I am very excited to announce this new section of my blog yay!. As a new mom and millennial per se, my pregnancy journey has been the most unique experience I’ve had in my life. I had to share it with all of you and reveal how being a mom has changed my life and how I have dealt with maternity (a very scary word for my generation) as a millennial woman. Being a traditional mom is different than being a millennial mom!. We, millennial moms, are active in the workforce, have a different perspective in motherhood, we are highly connected, we interact with media in one form or another, we stay more informed and tech-savvier than previous generations. I personally spent hours reading, watching videos and getting informed to enjoy my pregnancy and ensure baby is growing healthy and happy while taking care of my body and soul as well.

After reading thousands of reviews and asking for opinions from other moms I trust, here I am sharing the MOST ESSENTIAL ITEMS to have a wonderful pregnancy!

1. Reading Material:

Everyone will have advice and opinions for you during your pregnancy. But, it’s your pregnancy! Reading and acquiring knowledge about what you are going through will help you feel secure and make the most out of this journey. Find trusted sources and get informed. I recommend downloading pregnancy apps on your phone, such as What To Expect, BabyCenter, The Bump, and Flo since they will send you daily and weekly readings as well as you can communicate with other moms through forums.

2. Pregnancy pillow:

As time passes, you will feel a bit uncomfortable, and it will be hard to find a good sleep position. This pillow will hug you and make you sleep like a baby!

3. Prenatal Vitamins and DHA

I did a lot of research on this one and finally came to the conclusion that Garden of Life Prenatals were the best in the market. They are on the pricier side, but they are made from organic whole foods. They not only have all the vitamins to help baby develop healthy and strong but also contain vegetables such as organic ginger and organic peppermint to help fight nausea. They are Vegan, gluten free, non-GMO verified with NO synthetic binders or fillers.

4. Ginger tea:

I didn’t experience bad morning sickness; however, the first 5 weeks made me a bit nauseous in the morning. I drank ginger tea, and it made my day go easier.

5. Belly band:

As a makeup artist and working mom, I spent long hours working on my feet. My back hurt and my whole body felt sore. I was able to wear this band, and it helped me to get support on my core relieving lower back pain.

6. Facial Spray Evian Water:

As my pregnancy was progressing, I was always having hot flashes and sweating so much! My skin also felt drier, and it was more sensitive. I could not continue using some of my skincare products as they made it red and reactive. This spray was a lifesaver. I recommend keeping one next to your bed, desk, or in your bag, car, etc to refresh your face, tone, and hydrate as you desire throughout the day.

7. Maternity Jeans and Leggings

I did not purchase lots of maternity clothes because I feel you will only use them once or twice and I would rather spend that money on something else. Therefore, maternity jeans, dresses, and cotton shirts are essential to feel comfortable. I wore them with tank tops, cardigans, and other accessories to make the look fashionable. Now that I am in the postpartum phase, I still wear them while I recover from my c-section and get back into shape.

8. Lotion Lipikar Balm by La Roche-Posay

Stretch marks may be inevitable during pregnancy as your belly grows and skin stretches. It is also important to mention that sometimes no matter what you do, it all comes down to your genetics. However, if you are gaining weight at a steady pace, staying hydrated with lots of water, and applying moisturizing lotions, your skin will not get as many. I loved using the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm since it does not feel greasy or sticky on the skin. Its top ingredients shea butter and glycerin replenish skin’s essential lipids and provide long-lasting hydration.

9. Pregnancy Journal/Pictures

Nine months go by quicker than you think, so I suggest taking lots of pictures and writing on a journal how you feel month by month. It will be nice in a couple of years to look back and remember all those unique moments.

10. Healthy Snacks

I tried to stay healthy during my pregnancy, and I still gained 40 lbs. Although this is a time to indulge and enjoy, remember that your baby needs good nutrition to develop and your body needs good foods to maintain balance and cope with the changes. Health complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, hypertension, etc can arise, and it is best to avoid them. Make sure you carry unsalted nuts, fruits, greek yogurt, and other healthy options to snack between meals and avoid gaining more weight than you need.

11. Comfortable shoes

If you haven’t heard this before, your feet may grow! I did go up a size and had to get more shoes at the end of my pregnancy. Another thing to consider is that you won’t be able to tie your shoes as you can’t bend with a growing belly and back pain. Go shopping and get sandals, espadrilles, sneakers and other shoe types that slide in making you feel comfortable yet fashionable!

12. Antiacid

Heartburn and lower back pain were my two main concerns during my pregnancy. Tums were my best friends for 9 months! You can also eat carrots, drink hot milk with honey, and avoid acidic foods to alleviate acid reflux.

13. Maternity Bras

Not only your belly will grow but also your breasts as your body prepares to produce breastmilk. So, it is very important to wear a seamless, underwire and wire-free bra designed for your comfort. They will also be helpful after delivery if you plan to breastfeed.

Last but not least, you will need lots of positive thoughts, smiles, and laughs. Your state of mind will determine how you feel during pregnancy and how well your baby will develop. So, enjoy this moment, forget the symptoms and discomforts, and talk to your baby as much as you can. My #BabyAmeliaG is so attached to me! We have an incredible bond. I owe that to staying calm, happy, and lots of conversations even when she was teeny tiny.

I hope this article helps you to have an amazing pregnancy. Are you a millennial mom too? Share in the comments your essential items 🙂
