If your highlights look warmer, your brunette has faded, or your hair isn’t as shiny as it was after your last appointment, it may be time for a refresh.
Here in South Florida, sun exposure and time in the pool or ocean can affect both your color and the condition of your hair. But that doesn’t always mean you need new highlights or an all-over color appointment.
Sometimes a toner is enough to refresh the tone. Other times, your roots need attention, or your ends need a trim. At Jess Bonilla Beauty studio, I look at your current color, your regrowth, and the condition of your hair before recommending the right services.
The good news is that a refresh is usually gentler and simpler than a full change. My job is to read what your color actually needs, then do the necessary work that brings it back to life. Here is how I help my clients know when it is time, and what a real reset looks like once you sit down.

How Florida Summers Can Affect Your Hair Color
Sun exposure, frequent swimming, and changes in your washing routine can leave color looking faded or warmer than you prefer. Pool and ocean exposure can also leave hair feeling dry, which may affect its shine.
You might notice yellow tones in blonde hair, warmer tones in brunette hair, or fading in red shades. The amount of change depends on your color, hair condition, and exposure.

Signs It May Be Time for a Refresh
- Your color looks faded or has lost its richness.
- You notice unwanted yellow, orange, or warm tones.
- Your lengths have faded unevenly.
- Your roots or gray regrowth need attention.
- Your ends feel dry or need a trim.
Lighter ends aren’t always a problem. If you have balayage or dimensional color, that contrast may be intentional. What matters is whether your color still looks balanced and matches the result you want.
Gloss, toner, or full color: which service does your hair need?
Not every refresh is the same service. A gloss adds shine and refreshes tone, a toner neutralizes unwanted brass, and full color is for regrowth or a real change. Most post summer color needs one of the first two, which is the whole point of a refresh. Here is a quick way to see the difference.
| Service | Best for | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Toner or Gloss | Unwanted warmth, faded tone, or a shine refresh | Refines tone and can refresh depth and shine, depending on the formula. |
| Root Touch Up | Visible regrowth or gray coverage at the roots | Addresses new growth without automatically recoloring the lengths. |
| Highlights and lowlights | Dimension that needs rebalancing or a change in brightness and depth | Adds lighter or darker pieces where needed. |
| More extensive color work | A significant color change or uneven color requiring correction | Uses a customized approach based on your hair history and desired result. |
Toner and gloss are overlapping terms, and some formulas do both. You don’t need to choose the technical service yourself. I’ll assess your hair and explain what will help achieve your goal.

Refreshing at home versus with a professional
At home, care has its place. A quality purple shampoo can hold brass at bay between visits, and a good mask keeps the hair conditioned. What box color and home kits cannot do reliably is read your exact tone, correct brass evenly, or protect the integrity of hair that summer already stressed.
I see the results of rushed home color often, and correcting it usually costs more time and money than the original refresh would have. When your color has been through a season of sun and salt, the safest and most beautiful path is a professional who can assess it in person and treat it with the right formula and a bond building step.
How to make your color refresh last
The fastest way to protect a refresh is to wash less, wash cool, and shield your hair from the two things that fade it fastest, sun and heat. A few small habits keep that fresh from the salon look around for weeks instead of days:
- Use a sulfate free, color safe shampoo and space out your washes
- Rinse in cool water rather than hot
- Apply a heat protectant before you style
- Before the pool or the beach, use a leave in with UV protection and rinse your hair before you swim
In South Florida climate, that sun protection is the single habit that makes the biggest difference between visits.

The fall 2026 shades worth resetting into
If you do want a little change with your refresh, fall 2026 is leaning rich and dimensional. Velvet espresso and warm chocolate tones are everywhere, auburn and cinnamon spice are having a moment, and an expensive looking brunette, that glossy multi tonal depth, continues to lead. The beauty of these shades is that they flatter almost everyone and grow out softly, so they fit our Florida lifestyle without heavy upkeep.

Frequently asked questions
How often should you refresh your hair color?
Your maintenance schedule depends on the service, your regrowth, your hair condition, and how your color wears. A root touch up, toner, and highlights may each follow a different schedule. We’ll recommend a plan based on your hair.
How long should you wait after coloring to color again?
For a gloss or toner, you can refresh tone as soon as it fades, since these are gentle and do not lift. For permanent color over previous color, waiting a few weeks protects the hair. The right timing depends on your hair health, which is something I check in person before we decide.
How long does a toner or gloss last?
Longevity varies by formula, hair condition, washing routine, and exposure to sun and swimming. We’ll explain what to expect from the formula used at your appointment and how to maintain it.
Can I book the Fall Hair Refresh if I need highlights?
Highlights are not included in this offer. Contact us before booking if you want highlights, lowlights, or a more extensive color change so we can schedule the right appointment.
