How to Achieve 4 Different Foundation Finishes

You might be a makeup lover, but I can assure you may not know that you could achieve different skin finishes depending on the look you want to go for!. When it comes to foundations one size does not fit all. From matte to dewy and radiant, as a Makeup Artist, I had to learn the difference between foundation finishes. Nowadays, with so many products out there and new trends emerging every day, there is no right or wrong way to wear your foundation in terms of the finish. It is often confusing to decide which finish and type of foundation you want to go for, so let me break it down for you. Today, I’ll show you how to utilize products you most likely already have to achieve whatever look your heart desires as well as how to achieve different finishes of foundation.

sheer finish

When your skin looks great or when you don’t want to wear too much foundation, this is the perfect finish! Sheer means that you apply just a bit of product to cover and even out the skin. To achieve this look, you can wear a BB, CC Cream, tinted moisturizer or mix your foundation 50/50 with your daily moisturizer. Grab a powder brush or a dampen beauty sponge with a bit of water or setting spray and swirl over your face for sheer, blended coverage. Another way to achieve this finish is by applying foundation with your fingers and using the sponge to blend. Do not apply powder afterwards or if you do make sure you apply a thin layer all over the face or only in the T-zone. It is important to keep it natural and use very little amount of product for this type of finish.

dewy finish

The dewy finish is perfect if you want to give your skin a glowing effect. It is very trendy these days providing medium coverage. However, if your skin is oily I would not recommend it because you will end up with a melted face by the end of the day. It can also accentuate blemishes and deep wrinkles. A dewy finish is great for dry or mature skin because products are intended to be applied keeping moisture and hydration as well as to reflect light and create a radiant effect.

To create this effect, prep your skin with a non-mattifying primer and then spray your face with with MAC Fix +any other setting spray. You can also use rose water if preferred. Roll the foundation brush over the face making sure you dampen the brush again each time you pick up more product. Do not apply powder at the end, or if you do, just gently pad the T-Zone to avoid excessive shine. Finish the look by spraying your face all over a dewy setting spray, like the one listed below.

satin

Satin finish gives the skin a natural glow without being too oily or dullying skin. When you want to meet in the middle between dewy and matte, satin is the perfect one for you!. I would say the majority of looks you see now on social media use this technique. To achieve this look, start by using a primer. Then you can mix your foundation with a liquid highlighter (like Custom Enhancer Drops by Cover FX, MAC Strobe Cream, or NYX Liquid Illuminator). Use a foundation brush or makeup sponge to apply and blend foundation all over your face. Finally, set your makeup with a thin layer of powder. To achieve a more radiant look, you can use any powder listed below and then apply additional glow with a powder highlighter on the top of your cheekbones, center of your nose, lip bow, and brow bone. As the other finishes, do not forget to set the makeup application with a setting spray that will allow your makeup to stay put for longer time.

matte foundation finish

If you have oily or combination skin, this is the one for you! Additionally, if you are getting ready for an event, tv production or a photoshoot, staying matte is essential since the lighting, humidity and heat will bring your skin’s natural glow to the scene. Matte finish requires oil-free foundations as well as powder products that will seal the makeup to avoid shine.  When you want nothing reflecting off of your skin, start by prepping your skin and applying a mattifying primer. Use a dry brush to apply foundation and then blend any excess of product with a dampen beauty sponge. After applying foundation is really important to use powder to set the makeup. I love using the COVER FX, YSL, or Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powders under the eyes to highlight, and then apply it on the rest of the face using a wet makeup sponge. Make sure you do not apply excessive amount of product that could add more texture to your skin making it look cakey. Once the powder has cooked and set (usually about 5-10 minutes), you can dust off the excess with a fluffy powder brush. After your makeup application (blush, bronzer, etc) is complete, top it off by applying finishing powder and use a pressing or rolling motion to work the powder into the skin. This ensures full coverage that will last. Last but not least, use an oil free setting spray to set the makeup in place.

Whether you prefer matte, dewy, satin, or sheer, it is important to know first your skin type to make sure you choose the right products depending on the look you would like to achieve. I promise that I will make a post soon to explain better skin types. Meanwhile, let me know in the comments which one is your favorite finish!
